Graduate Assistantship in Information Literacy for Library & Information Services
Position includes working on curriculum development, assisting with active learning in courses, data collection for course enrollment planning, and curriculum research.
- Graduate Assistant will have use of faculty office FL 208A
- Position is for 20 hrs weekly, hours flexible.
- This position provides teaching and curriculum development experience and opportunities for refining your research skills.
- This position provides a tuition scholarship (up to $6,900) and a stipend of $5,320 for the 2008-2009 academic year.
(Note: this position is to be filled fall/spring 2008-2009)
Major Responsibilities:
The Information Literacy Graduate Assistant provides active learning teaching assistance to library faculty instructors during each semester. Support includes:
- Active learning lesson planning with LIB102 and LIB105 instructors
- In-class teaching and hands-on student support during weekly class sessions
- In-class teaching and hands-on student support for course-related instruction sessions
- Assist in proctoring the LIB Proficiency Exam for undergraduate students
- Involved in creating and maintaining web pages for Instruction Unit and/or individual instructors
- Follow-up Homework Help sessions for students in LIB courses
- Research and identify Information and Technology literacy teaching resources to be added to the Instruction Unit's resources
The Graduate Assistant also works with the Instruction Services and Outreach Services Unit Coordinators and occasionally with the Library Faculty Curriculum Committee, providing:
- Library research hands-on student support during scheduled hours at the student-assistant reference desk
- Assisting the in the design and presentation of instructional and outreach programming
- Research for information and technology literacy published literature
- Assisting the LIB Course Coordinator in reviewing course enrollment patterns and projecting course need
- Information and support to Library Faculty Liaisons for their consultation with college faculty across Plattsburgh State
- Testing Instruction Unit student surveys, proficiency, and course exams
Qualifications:
- Full-time graduate student at Plattsburgh State University of New York.
- Experience, course-work or strong interest in curriculum development and teaching or tutoring.
- Basic information and technology competency with email, web searching, library database searching, and word processing.
- Experience with web-based technologies, or willing to learn
- Reliability, diligence, collegiality, excellent oral and written communication skills, creativity, patience, and concern for undergraduate student success.
