Frequently Asked Questions for Adult Learners

I haven't been to college in years. Will I be able to handle my courses at Plattsburgh?


Adult students excel in their college studies. Far more common are the social and psychological adjustments that adults have to make. We can help you with these adjustments.

Do I have to be a full-time student if I formally matriculate?


Once you are formally accepted and enroll in a degree program, you may attend either full- or part-time. Part-time status means you are enrolled in from one to 11 credits.

I've never been to college. Will I be able to enroll at Plattsburgh State?


You may attend as a non-matriculated or non-degree student without completing the application process (which would require that you submit academic documentation). "Non-matriculated" simply means that you are not accepted to the college and enrolled in a degree program. Once you have successfully completed 12 credit hours, you may apply for admission based on your Plattsburgh course work and grades.

Can I earn credit for my life experiences?


Plattsburgh State does not award credit for life experiences; however, there are ways to obtain such credit. You may take a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) examination and use your knowledge to earn credit. CLEP examinations are given every month. You may also challenge a course or take a proficiency examination.

Can I complete a degree program by taking all evening courses?  


Plattsburgh State offers two evening degree programs, one in Sociology and one in Business.

Whom can I call for help in choosing a major and registering for courses?


Adult learners may contact the Center for Lifelong Learning (800) 388-647 or the Career Services Office (518) 564-2050. Here, they can assist you in evaluating prior credit, exploring various majors, and registering for courses.

Can I take any courses at home via the Web?


At Plattsburgh State, we offer a verity of web-based courses. We also have distance learning classes at individual sites around the North Country, primarily in nursing and graduate courses in education. Plattsburgh State is also a member of the SUNY Learning Network. It is not possible to obtain a degree from Plattsburgh State University via the web.
