What is Plattsburgh "known for" as a college?
Plattsburgh has long been known as a "teachers' college" because of its tradition of preparing educators. Today, that expression also refers to the college's strong commitment to teaching - regardless of the major. There's a high amount of student-faculty interaction here, with all the classes taught by faculty, not student teaching assistants (T.A.s). The college is also known for its exceptionally welcoming campus atmosphere and beautiful regional location.
Who teaches the classes?
All classes are taught by faculty, not student teaching assistants (T.A.s) or graduate assistants.
How big are the classes?
The average class size is 24 students.
Will I be able to obtain an internship?
Our internship programs are varied and comprehensive. They are available to all students, regardless of major.
What tutoring and other academic support services are available?
Plattsburgh offers a large support services program, with both faculty and paid student "peer tutors" available to help you raise your grades or get through a difficult subject. Learn more about the Claude J. Clark Learning Center and our Academic Support programs.
What services are available for students with documented learning or physical disabilities?
Plattsburgh offers academic, personal, and career counseling for LD/PC students. In general, applicants must meet the traditional entrance requirements; however, special consideration is available for borderline students who submit appropriate documentation to the Admissions Office. For more information, contact Admissions at (888) 673-0012 or (518) 564-2040.
What is the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), and who is eligible for it?
SUNY's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) provides academic support and financial assistance for disadvantaged New York State students who show promise for mastering college-level work, but who do not meet the traditional entrance requirements. The program offers special tutoring and advisement for planning your course work, as well as career, educational, and personal counseling. Admissions criteria for EOP differs significantly for freshman and transfer applicants. For more information, call Admissions, consult the SUNY Application Viewbook, or visit our EOP website.
What is the Honors Program all about, and who can participate in it?
Plattsburgh's Honors Program is one of the oldest in SUNY. The program offers qualified students small seminar classes, advanced and unique course selections, and special opportunities to work on research with faculty. Students typically take one honors course per semester in addition to their regular course work. Students who receive a Presidential Scholarship, or Academic Excellence Scholarship are automatically eligible to enroll in the Honors Program. Other students can request to join the program by meeting with the Director of the Honors Program and demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence. In addition to the courses, Plattsburgh also offers an active Honors Student Association - a closely-knit student group that allows honors students to interact outside of the classroom.
What academic scholarships are available?
Plattsburgh offers merit-based scholarships to qualified freshmen and transfer students. Our Admissions Office automatically screens eligible students; no separate scholarship application is necessary. Minimum qualifications for a freshman merit scholarship are an 88-plus high school average and an 1150 on the SAT (or 25-plus ACT). Scholarships are renewable and range from our $1,000 Freshman Merit Award to our $4,350 full-tuition Presidential Scholarship. View directory of Freshman and Transfer Scholarships.
