Women's Studies Faculty - Dr. Deborah Altamirano
Associate Professor
Deborah R. Altamirano, the current Chair of the Women's Studies Department, is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and an associate of the Latin American Studies Program. Her areas of teaching and research interest include gender, political and social movements, transnationalism, democratic transitions, and immigrant, refugee, and exile communities. She has done extensive ethnographic research in Greece with women political activists and with former women political exiles and political refugees. Currently, she is focusing on comparative research in Latin America. Dr. Altamirano received her Bachelors Degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley, and her Masters and Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has been a fellow at the Institute for Ethics in Public Life at SUNY Plattsburgh, and has been very active in designing and teaching in the freshman learning communities. She received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006.
