John Shout held a joint professorship in English and Theatre, and, as such, taught a variety of courses in dramatic literature and playwriting. Within Theatre, he also taught courses in voice, musical theatre and directing. Among his varied publications are articles on the radical drama of the 1930s, images of women in nineteenth-century drama, Irish theatre, and studies of such figures as Marc Blitzstein, Judy Holliday, and Colleen Dewhurst. In his years at SUNY Plattsburgh, he directed regularly, including, most recently, productions of "Life X3," "Tartuffe," and an original adaptation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice" books. He had acted in productions of "Proof" and "South Pacific," and co-ordinated the annual trips to Stratford (Ontario) for the viewing of extraordinary productions. He is the recipient of nine "Spammie" awards.
