Why Study Abroad?
Experience
You must have some international experience to function in the age of globalization. Businesses are in fact looking to colleges to provide global training programs, and citizens expect their leaders to be globally competent as we enter this new area. Studying abroad is one of the best ways you can begin earning international experience. Spending an extended period of time in another country exposes you to new and different forms of conducting business, commercial markets, government systems and social interaction. This knowledge is invaluable to many organizations, both public and private, which have relations or conduct businesses abroad. Being a globally competent and sensitive gives you an advantage over those who have never experienced adapting to other cultures and new ways. It also makes you more aware and sympathetic to the world's many challenges by forcing you to see that no matter how different we might be from one another, we share the same planet as our home.
Growth
Studying abroad is also an experience that fosters personal growth and independence. Many of you will return from your time abroad with new ideas about what you would like to do with the rest of your lives. Some of you may change majors, and some of you may add a second one or a minor. More importantly, you will return home having lived in and navigated your way through another country on your own without the immediate support of your family and existing friends. Having had this experience can make prospects of life after college less scary for you, and something new to which you can look forward. Many students study abroad for many different reasons. In order for you to gain the most out of your time in college and abroad, you must keep your mind open, your sense of adventure keen and be willing to take a step out into the unknown on your own and with tact!
