Financial Aid Advice

Financial Aid and Study Abroad

In many cases, US Federal and New York State financial aid are two forms of aid that you may use to study abroad on a SUNY program. Federal law even allows for the calculation of most study abroad costs to be used in financial need analysis. If you have scholarships, then you will have to check with whomever awards it to you to see if you can use it to pay for a study abroad program. To apply for financial aid, follow these steps:

Plattsburgh and Non-Plattsburgh Students: You start the process through your home institution's financial office!!!

  1. Plattsburgh and Non-Plattsburgh Students: File a FAFSA form electronically as soon as possible, preferably before March 1st for each year. Have it sent to your home institution's financial aid office. If you do not know what the FAFSA is, please contact your home institution's financial aid office.
  2. Plattsburgh and Non-Plattsburgh Students: After you have applied, SUNY Plattsburgh will send you a packet of information. Attached to the letter, you will find a "Study Abroad Budget."  Make an appointment with your home institution's financial office and take this sheet with you.
  3. Non-Plattsburgh Students: If you do not normally attend SUNY Plattsburgh, then you will need what is called a Consortium Agreement. Your home institution's financial aid office must initiate this process, and then forward the agreement for signing to SUNY Plattsburgh's Financial Aid Office.
  4. Plattsburgh Students on other SUNY programs: If you are attending a program through another SUNY campus, then you will need what is called a Consortium Agreement.  You will need to take a copy of your acceptance letter and program cost documentation to the SUNY Plattsburgh Financial Aid Office, and they will advise you on what to do from there.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!
