Why SJIU?

SJIU is a new university designed for international students who would like to spend a summer, semester, or academic year. SJIU allows you the opportunity to be immersed in the Italian language and culture. You may study in English. SJIU offers a variety of courses, most of which are in the humanities.  

How to Apply

You must submit the SUNY Application and e-mail for copies of the SJIU application at globaleducation@plattsburgh.edu. by the deadline given in the above section. You only need to pay the $35 application fee for SUNY Plattsburgh, and do not need to pay an application fee for SJIU. (Note: the 85.3kb SUNY Application PDF file requires the latest version of Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download. )

Courses at SJIU

Courses are held in English with the exception of foreign language classes. No prior study of Italian is necessary. It is mandatory, however, to take at least one Italian language course while enrolled for the semester program, but not the summer program. Students who are uncertain as to their knowledge of Italian will take a placement exam to evaluate their level. You must take at least twelve credit hours and can take no more than 16 during the semester program. For the summer program, you take two courses and can earn 6 or 7 credits total. The Italian language courses are worth four credits and most others are worth three credits.

Accommodations

SJIU's standard housing option is in traditional Italian apartments. Apartments are generally shared by 4-6 students. Apartments are located in Torino where students have easy access to both the historic center and the SJIU campus in Vinovo (approximately 25-30 minutes by bus). All apartments will be furnished with bed linens and towels. Kitchens will be equipped with basic utilities and cooking supplies (kitchen appliances, pots and pans, etc.). This is the ideal arrangement for students who wish to have more freedom, but it also means a higher commitment in terms of cleaning, buying food, cooking, etc. Students must leave the apartment clean and tidy.

Location

The SJIU main campus is located in Vinovo, just south of Turin. Turin is one of Italy's largest cities, located in the northwestern part close to the French and Swiss borders. Most recently, Turin was in the international spotlight when it hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics; however, the city has been an important world destination for many centuries. By studying in Turin, you will have easy access to Italy's other main cities (Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice). As well as other European countries such as Austria, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany.

Please note: You will pay your Application Fee, Deposit, SUNY tuition, Program Fee and Health Insurance to SUNY before you leave. The Program fee does not include room and board. You will pay St. John International University directly for housing. There is no meal plan available so you will need to plan on purchasing food and cooking for yourself.

 

Italian Visa: All foreigners require a visa to study in Italy (even those who can enter as tourists without visas). Before accepting admission to the program, you should be aware that the visa application requires a lot of paperwork, for you to appear in person at the Italian Consulate in New York City and for you to register with the Italian police after your arrival in Italy. You must consider the costs of going to New York City and any administrative fees the Italian government may charge you. While SUNY Plattsburgh and SJIU will indicate where you can find information on this process, the visa application process is between you and the Italian government, and is beyond our control and influence.
