Why Deusto?
This program is a wonderful opportunity if you would like to learn Spanish and visit some of Spain's major cities. Excursions play an important part of the summer program. The city of Bilbao is major city in northeast Spain - right on the coast with beaches, but offers a more authentic experience than some of Spain's more known tourist cities.
- Terms: 4 weeks Summer (end of June thru end of July)
- Eligibility: open to all students currently enrolled in a US college or university; minimum 2.5 GPA
- Credits: 7 undergraduate

How to Apply
You must submit the SUNY Application and the Deusto Application to SUNY Plattsburgh by the deadline given in the above section. Courses at Deusto
The program is worth seven credits in Spanish. Everyone takes a four-credit Spanish language course and a three credit content course. Upon arrival, you will take a language proficiency exam to determine your level of proficiency of Spanish and which class you will be placed for the Spanish course. For the content courses, the projected offerings are:
- Spanish Culture and Civilization* - 3 US Credits, includes a component of Basque Culture
- Spain in Europe** - 3 US Credits
- Introduction to Hispanic Literature*** - 3 Credits
- Spanish Literature: 20th Century*** - 3 Credits
- Seminar in Advanced Spanish Grammar*** - 3 Credits
* This course is open to all students, regardless or their level of Spanish.
** The student must be registered for Spanish II or have an equivalent level of Spanish.
*** The student must be registered for Spanish III or have an equivalent level of Spanish.
Accommodations
You may choose between living in Deusto's residence halls or living with a host family that the University of Deusto selects. Both options are subject to availability. You can find more information on Deusto's website.
Location
Bilbao has one of the cleanest and most efficient metro systems in Europe. In just forty minutes the visitor can travel from downtown Bilbao to the nearby lush green Basque coast. Transportation is easy and affordable in Spain. The location of Bilbao is a major plus, since the Cote Basque in Southern France in just about an hour from Bilbao. World-class tourist sites like Biarritz, San Sebastian and Pamplona (where the San Fermin festivals are held every July) are close by. The Basque Country is famous for the high quality of its food--some experts say that it is the best in Spain. Major European cities like Madrid, and cultural heritage sites like Toledo, are on the itinerary, so students will get to know some of the most important cities in Spain. Summer weather in Northern Spain is mild and not a suffocating as in southern Spain.
2009 Summer Spanish Program Cost Estimates:
- New York State Residents and Non-Resident : $4,845
- Includes:
- Application fee: $35 due when you apply
- Deposit: $200 due several weeks after accepted
- SUNY Tuition and Program Fee (includes housing and food): $3950 for NYS and non-NYS residents
- Health Insurance: $160 for all students
Please note: You will pay your Application Fee, Deposit, SUNY tuition, Program Fee and Health Insurance to SUNY before you leave.
Other costs you will have to participate in this program:
- Roundtrip Airfare: fares vary drastically
- Passport: US passports currently cost $110.
