Why Deusto?
The city of Bilbao is major city in northeast Spain - right on the coast with beaches.It offers a more authentic experience than some of Spain's more known tourist cities, which will allow you greater access to the locals and more opportunities to practice your Spanish in one of its native environments.
- Terms: Fall (September thru December) and Spring (January thru May)
- Eligibility: open to all students currently enrolled in a US college or university; minimum 2.8 GPA; minimum sophomore standing at the time of participation
- Credits: 12-18 undergraduate
- Application Deadline: October 1 for Spring and March 15 for Fall
How to Apply
You must submit the SUNY Application and the Deusto Application to SUNY Plattsburgh by the deadline given in the above section. You may download them from our website, or you may e-mail us for copies at globaleducation@plattsburgh.edu. (Note: the 85.3kb SUNY Application PDF file requires the latest version of Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download. )
Courses at Deusto
Most of the credit you will earn will be for Spanish language courses, but you may enroll in a content course or two.You must take at least twelve credits, but no more than nineteen. Depending on your level of Spanish, you can take a content courses designed for non-native Spanish speakers, or advanced speakers may be able to enroll into courses with Spanish students/for native speakers.To view a list of available courses for each term, please visit Deusto's website.
Accommodations
You may choose between living in Deusto's residence halls or living with a host family that the University of Deusto selects.Both options are subject to availability. For the semester programs, you will pay for your room and board after you arrive in Spain in Euros/directly to Deusto.
Location
Bilbao has one of the cleanest and most efficient metro systems in Europe. In just forty minutes the visitor can travel from downtown Bilbao to the nearby lush green Basque coast. Transportation is easy and affordable in Spain. The location of Bilbao is a major plus, since the Cote Basque in Southern France in just about an hour from Bilbao. World-class tourist sites like Biarritz, San Sebastian and Pamplona (where the San Fermin festivals are held every July) are close by. The Basque Country is famous for the high quality of its food--some experts say that it is the best in Spain. Major European cities like Madrid, and cultural heritage sites like Toledo, are on the itinerary, so students will get to know some of the most important cities in Spain. Summer weather in Northern Spain is mild and not a suffocating as in southern Spain.
2008 Semester Program Cost Estimates:
- New York State Residents and Non-Residents : $11,952
- Includes:
- Application fee: $35 due when you apply
- Deposit: $350 due several weeks after accepted
- SUNY Tuition and Program Fee (includes tuition only): $6175 for NYS and non_NYS residents
- Room and Board: estimated $5000
- Health Insurance: $392 all students
Please note: You will pay your Application Fee, Deposit, SUNY tuition, Semester Abroad Fee and Health Insurance to SUNY before you leave. You will pay for your accommodations to Deusto shortly after you arrive.
Other costs you will have to participate in this program:
- Roundtrip Airfare: fares vary drastically
- Spanish Visa: $100 fee + expenses to New York City to apply
- Passport: US passports currently cost $95
