American College of Sports Medicine® (ACSM) Certifications

Be Eligible for Certification from the World's Largest Sports Medicine Organization

The American College of Sports Medicine® (ACSM), based in Indianapolis, Indiana, puts into practice its strategic efforts to promote and integrate scientific research, education, certification testing, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life. In addition, ACSM has more than 20,000 International, National, and Regional Chapter members.

As a Fitness and Wellness Leadership student, you will receive a comprehensive and standardized curriculum within the major that addresses the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) specified by the ACSM Committee on Certification and Registry Boards (CCRB) to prepare for both the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer SM and the ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor® certification examinations. In addition, you will be prepared to take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) certification by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

ACSM Personal Trainer and ACSM Health/Fitness Certifications

  • The ACSM Certified Personal Trainer is designed for a fitness professional involved in developing and implementing an individualized approach to exercise leadership in healthy populations and/or those individuals with medical clearance to exercise. The ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor® is designed primarily for leaders of preventive health programs in corporate, commercial, and community settings aimed at low- to moderate- risk individuals or persons with controlled diseases, such as hypertension, obesity or asthma.
  • NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) Certification is designed for professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention.
