Sociology Faculty - Dr. Lynn Schlesinger

Assistant Professor of Sociology

Dr. Schlesinger's research has included studying women who live with chronic pain, students with disabilities, clinical research on Fibromyalgia; aging; and a social-historical study of deaf education. In 1994 the Society for Disability Studies awarded her the Emerging Scholar award for her work on women and chronic pain.

Dr. Schlesinger earned her B.A. at Smith College, and her M.A. and Ph.D. at Brandeis University. After growing up in Plattsburgh, then living elsewhere for many years, she feels fortunate to be able to do what she loves in an area that she loves.

  • Sociology of Health and Medicine: Sociology of health and illness
  • Disability Studies: the experiences of people who live with disabilities
  • Sociology of Family: sociology of families and changes in family structures
  • Introduction to Sociology: Dr. Schlesinger particularly enjoys teaching this introductory course, in which students begin to acquire a "sociological imagination."
  • Junior Seminar: upper-level writing course and methods

Awards

  • Outstanding Faculty Award 1994: the Plattsburgh Chapter of AKD (the Sociology Honor Society) awarded Dr. Schlesinger its first award of this kind
  • Emerging Scholar Award 1994: the Society for Disability Studies award for her work on women and chronic pain
