Alaina comes from Albany, New York. She is in the Mathematics BA program with minors in Business and Accounting.
In Her Own Words
"I think I made a great decision becoming a math major. I feel that I am being challenged intellectually and that the skills I am learning will benefit me in my future. I am planning on using my math and business background to move on and get my MBA."
Jon Mortelette, Class of 2008
Challenging, But Worth the Challenge
Jon is a double major in Mathematics and Environmental Studies. He lives in Plattsburgh and is a graduate of Waterville Central High School.
In His Own Words
"The math program at Plattsburgh State is amazing. The department is full of understanding, committed professors and the students are fun and easy to work with. The major is difficult at times but is worth all the work and is very satisfying. To sum it all up, math majors at Plattsburgh are simply the coolest people in northern New York."
Ilona Sitnitsky, Class of 2007
Preparing for Career in Math and Science
Ilona has a double major in physics and math and a minor in chemistry. She comes from Herzeliyya, Israel and is a native Russian. When she graduates from Plattsburgh she intends to pursue a PhD in physics.
In Her Own Words
"The math department at SUNY Plattsburgh is friendly and welcoming. I enjoy all of my math courses because of the environment in class, where professors know you by name and are willing to help any time you have a question. They encourage you to think, and teach you not only 'how' to apply math but also 'why.' You can see that math professors love their jobs. They bring enthusiasm to class every day."
Zach Warner, Class of 2008
Preparing for Career as a Math Teacher
Zach Warner comes from Averill Park, NY. He is in the MST/BA Mathematics program, currently finishing his mathematics degree and beginning his graduate work in education. Zach is a Presidential Scholar at SUNY Plattsburgh.
In His Own Words
"The MST Program is a wonderful opportunity for future educators. Instead of doing my undergrad degree in math education, I was able to get a firm basis in mathematics and will graduate with a BA. I can then move on and complete a graduate degree in education and fulfill all requirements for NYS teacher certification. All of this is done in five years and I was able to save a lot of money on tution.
The professors have been great to work with... that's right, work with not for. All instructors want to see you succeed and will work with you to get you where you need to be. There are tough classes, but if you turn to the faculty, you'll excel at any course."
Marie Wass, Class of 2007
Approachable Faculty
Marie lives in Peru, New York. She is in the Mathematics BS program.
In her Own Words
"The thing I appreciate the most about the Math Department at Plattsburgh is the approachability of the faculty. Each professor is extremely willing to help the students out; I've literally camped out in professors' offices. Another thing I enjoy is how I'm learning to really understand what's going on, not just how to solve the problems. The more math classes I take, the more I see how they're all connected and I get a better idea of the big picture. For new and incoming students, my advice would be to take advantage of the professors' office hours and get to know your classmates."
Jenn Laskowitz, Class of 2007
Being a Math Major at SUNY Plattsburgh Is Definitely a Great Experience
Jenn Laskowitz is a junior in the Mathematics Adolescence Education B.A./B.S. program.
In Her Own Words
"Being a math major has its ups and downs. But when you're stressed out with so much work and so many proofs that you just can't figure out, you can come to a class that makes it all worthwhile. 'Core' (Math 397, Core Mathematics Problem Seminar) is such an amazing class - it puts together all the math you've learned over the past few years."
"Core helped me to write better proofs and learn how to explain on paper what I was thinking. Which if you are an education major is definitely something you will need to be able to do. Also, Professor Bodenrader makes the class a lot of fun, with learning math by playing tic-tac-toe."
Angela Rotella, Class of 2007
Supportive Faculty and Fellow Students Make Meeting the Challenges of Math Fun
Angela Rotella is a junior in the Mathematics Adolescence Education B.A./B.S. program. She is also the president of the Math Club.
In Her Own Words
"Plattsburgh State has a wonderful mathematics program. You will have the opportunity to work with other math majors; Math Commons is a great place to do this. The students are far from being on their own when it comes to studying and working on assignments."
"The mathematics faculty is full of intelligent, interesting, and helpful people. The professors really care about the students' success in math and in life. They are willing to help you as often and nearly whenever you want, even if you are not in their class that semester."
"The support you receive from fellow classmates and the faculty is invaluable as you continue your mathematics major. The program is always advancing and changing. If you want a challenging, exciting, interesting, and supportive environment to study mathematics, then Plattsburgh State is the place for you."
