Mathematics Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh State Degree In Math Offers Challenges and Opens Doors

A fractal image shows patterns similar to those in nature A major in mathematics is a valuable achievement that opens many doors.

For some, that means teaching. For others, a surprisingly broad range of math-related careers. Either way, our program prepares you to compete at the highest levels.

Some of our students go on to graduate school in mathematics, while others do graduate work in related fields. Others find employment right after completing their bachelor's degree.

Mathematics majors are valued in the workplace for their skills in analytic thinking. You might also consider combining the mathematics major or minor with a major or minor in another discipline, such as computer science, economics, or chemistry, to name just a few possibilities.

Such combinations put you in a particularly strong position for career options when you graduate.

Emphasis On Academic Excellence and Teaching

All of our Math courses are taught by our faculty - not by graduate assistants.

These courses include advanced seminars and independent studies for students in the mathematics major programs, as well as the fundamentals.

For students that find they benefit from additional help, the Claude J. Clarke Learning Center provides free tutoring for lower level mathematics courses. Students looking to challenge themselves sometimes volunteer as tutors, while others explore our Honors Program.

Before you can take any mathematics course higher than MAT101, you must satisfy the competency requirements.

Our Students Work Closely With Each Other and With Faculty

Students working together on a math problem in the Math Commons Plattsburgh State is a place where our faculty get to know our students.

Our students also enjoy working together in the math commons - a place to gather and discuss assignments or just hang out.

The Math Club organizes interesting speakers, and each year a group of students travels to the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference.

Check out our department newsletter for more about student activities, and for news from our alumni.
