Tutoring for ACC Branch Campus Students

Academic Support Online

The Learning Center's Online Writing Lab has been recently converted to Angel. The service is set up primarily for students who cannot come to campus and use our on-site tutoring program (distance learning students, students taking online courses, students attenting Plattsburgh State's Adirondack Community College (ACC) branch campus).

Using Angel

  1. You should access Angel through SUNY Plattsburgh's homepage (link on the bottom right hand side)
  2. Once in Angel, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the link to find Angel group sites
  3. When given a search box, type "online" then search
  4. When given a link for the Learning Center, click on it
  5. Once in the LC site, you should have access to see what the site offers before actually logging in.  However, if you want to utilize the service - have a paper reviewed, for example, you need to Login to Angel.

Please note: using this service does not guarantee an improved grade on any document, homework assignment, or material submitted. Our tutors are trained in their areas of expertise, but they cannot do your homework for you and they will not rewrite your paper for you. It is your responsibility to take a tutor's comments and work with them to improve your assignment.

Please follow the following directions once in the online tutoring area

Before submitting your document, you should read it out loud, either by yourself or with a friend present, to gauge clarity of your ideas and to proofread for editing errors. Please note that a response from a tutor may take 48 hours, and in some instances, you may be asked to revise and resubmit your document. If you do not receive a response withing 48 hours please contact the Learning Center via email at learningcenter@plattsburgh.edu .

Tutors will address each document by suggesting revision according to the following goals:

  1. Content: What are you saying and how does it work with your intended audience and purpose?
  2. Organization: What is your thesis (main idea), what evidence do you include to prove it, and what is the order of your evidence (are you skipping around, not following your main idea)?
  3. Development: Are you saying too much about one thing and not enough about another?
  4. Vocabulary: Are the words being used appropriate for your audience and purpose, and are they consistent with college-level writing?
  5. Mechanics: Are any grammatical, spelling, proofreading errors evident?

The Angel site contains a folder for "Writing Assistance"; utilize those materials as much as possible. In addition, for many common grammatical errors or research citation style suggestions, you may be referred to the Purdue On-line Writing Lab at Purdue University for assistance (see link below). This site has various informational handouts that you can print from home.

Additional Resources for Style Guides and Documentation Tips

These sites are offered by the Learning Center for educational purposes only. They are presented here to give students the opportunity to search for writing and documentation assistance independently.
