Jonathan Slater's career at SUNY Plattsburgh began when he was invited onto the team of specialists at the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at the School of Business and Economics in 1992. He managed several federal- and state-funded projects in international business training, regional market planning, and local economic development. Before joining Plattsburgh State's Communication faculty in 1997, Dr. Slater served as an interim member of the executive staff at a local public television station. Dr. Slater began his career as a public relations writer and went on to head a firm that counseled top marketers and advertising agencies on their cross-border message strategies. Later, several private and not-for-profit organizations enlisted Dr. Slater's help in developing their corporate and promotional communication programs.
Since 2000, Dr. Slater has been a media analyst in the ground-breaking Community Web Visibily research project (www.communitywebvisibility.com). The project is contributing to the field of emerging mass media communication and, simultaneously, assists rural communities with their tourism and economic development strategies in the digital age. Dr. Slater and his partners in the project have published and presented their findings in the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Slater also has a number of professional and academic articles on cross-border marketing to his credit. Dr. Slater is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, the Media Ecology Association, and the Adirondack Research Consortium. He is a past vice president and former board member of the Global Business Association. Dr. Slater recently joined the editorial collective of Counterblast, a journal of culture and communication. In addition to his duties in the Communication Department at Plattsburth State, Dr. Slater also teaches in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, where he earned the distinction in 2002 as the program's "Most Outstanding Faculty Member."
