Meet Dr. Armstrong

Dr. James Armstrong arrived at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1981 as a member of the Anthropology Department. He hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Riverside and B.A. from Long Beach State University. He was the chair of the anthropology department and associate director of the honors program before becoming the director in 2011.

Dr. Armstrong has done extensive fieldwork in Israel and among Vietnamese refugees in the United States. He has published articles on ethno-semantics, modern Israeli culture, pedagogy, American culture, and research ethics. He has been especially active in the design and implementation of general education in the SUNY Plattsburgh curriculum. In 2007, he was promoted to University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Anthropology.
