Director of the Honors Program - Dr. David Mowry

Meet "Doc"

Photo of Dr. David Mowry Dr. David Mowry arrived at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1971 as a member of the Philosophy Department. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University and a B.A. from SUNY Oswego. He also studied philosophy at the University of London. He became director of the Honors Program in 1984 and has seen the program grow from 26 students in the fall of 1984 to more than 300 students at the current time.

'Doc', as he is known around the Honors Center, has published a number of articles in the history of philosophy, ethics, and the theory of knowledge. He has also written extensively on honors education. He served as President of the Northeast Region of the National Collegiate Honors Council and is active in both regional and national organizations. In the spring of 2001, he was appointed University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the SUNY Press, and was appointed as Chairman of the Editorial Board in September, 2003.

Doc has a daughter on the faculty of St. John's University and a son-in-law on the faculty of the Einstein Medical Center, both in New York City. He has a granddaughter, Helen Margaret, born Sept. 10, 2001 and a grandson, David Alexander, born July 18, 2003. His cottage in the nearby Adirondacks is the scene of many gatherings of Honors Program Students.
