Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Human Development & Family Relations (58 credits)
The Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development & Family Relations offers four different curriculum choices: the general curriculum in Human Development & Family Relations, and study options in child care management, adolescence, and gerontology.
Human Development & Family Relations general curriculum
The general curriculum in Human Development & Family Relations will prepare you for a variety of specific careers in public and private human service agencies. We emphasize helping individuals and families solve their own problems, such as those involving family relations, aging, nutritional planning, and family financial management.
Course work covers topics in child development, nutrition, counseling, social work and others. You will also delve into the real world with a one-semester, full-time internship experience in a human service agency. This combination of course work and field work will well prepare you for immediate employment or graduate study, as well as introduce you to career possibilities.
This curriculum places emphasis on developing appropriate skills to help individuals and families solve problems related to child development, family relations, adolescence, aging, nutritional planning for individuals and families, and family financial management. It also features a one-semester, full-time supervised internship required in an appropriate human service agency.
Program Requirements
The program requires two introductory general education courses, PSY 101 and SOC 101, normally taken in one's freshman year. These courses are prerequisites to CDF 211 - Child Development and CDF 311 - Family in Contemporary Society, required of all CFS majors. Other required courses include FNI 191 - Nutrition and Well-Being, CLG 402 - Intro. to Counseling Techniques, and either SOC/SWK 260 - Introduction to Social Welfare or SOC/SWK 261 - Human Services Agencies. A twelve-credit internship and a concurrent three-credit seminar comprise the senior capstone experience for all CFS majors.
