GIS and Geography Labs

G.I.S. and Computer Work

Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.) and computer mapping are important tools in contemporary geographical analysis.

A required course for the Geography Major is GEG 340 - Computer Applications in Geography. This course introduces various computer applications in Geography (software used include: ArcView GIS, MapInfo GIS, and Terrain Navigator (digital mapping), and makes extensive use of the New York State GIS Clearinghouse and digital orthophotos. GEG 350 - Geographical Information Systems focuses on GIS work.

A unique feature of the Geography Major is the availability of GEG 490 in which students may continue advance work in GIS beyond what the formal course work offers. Resources include the Geography Lab and a completely dedicated GIS Lab with 18 work stations, various printers and plotters, digitizers and scanners. This GIS Lab has a teaching work station. Lecture rooms also include "smart room technology" and are completely equipped with computers and on-screen projection. GIS and digital mapping software is also installed on these computers.
