Foreign Languages and Literature at SUNY Plattsburgh
Change Your Perspective on the World
Deepen your understanding of various cultures and the world around you by learning their languages and studying their literature. Get to know who they are, what they believe, and how they express themselves. As you gain insight into the values, arts, and histories of other people, as well as knowledge of different geographies, economies, politics, and social structures, you will discover the importance of language in today's world.
Our major and minor programs in foreign languages and literature emphasize a well-balanced liberal arts education. With our programs you will:
- Gain an advanced proficiency in oral and written language
- Widen your knowledge and understanding of the culture as well as the geographical, political, economic and social structures of the countries in which each language is spoken
- Learn about the respective countries' literature and arts, and how to evaluate ideas and aesthetic forms
- Take the opportunity to travel and study abroad; they are encouraged, and as much as one-half of the major program may be carried out abroad
Why study foreign languages and literature at Plattsburgh State?
We offer majors in French and Spanish, and a major in foreign languages instruction for prospective teachers. We also offer minor programs in French, German, and Spanish; and individual courses or sequences in linguistics. Moreover, courses in Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Latin are also offered occasionally.
Plattsburgh State is in a great location. The city is right on Lake Champlain and next to the Adirondack Park. It is in the country but close to several major cities; Montreal is one and half hours north, New York City and Boston are five hours away, and Burlington is just across the lake.
Would you like to live in Montreal? Would you like to go to Peru? Would you like to earn college credit for your travels? Our program will let you completely immerse yourself in foreign cultures with either day trips or for a full semester.
