- About Plattsburgh
The Odyssey Freshmen Adventure Program is SUNY Plattsburgh's adventure orientation program. It’s a week of getting to know other students in an off-campus setting the week before fall classes begin. Rock climbing, paddling, hiking, and initiative games fill up the week, but the advantages go well beyond those adventures. For expeditionary studies students, especially, this is an adventure on multiple levels.
You may be based for the week at Twin Valleys, SUNY Plattsburgh’s 700 acre camp located about forty miles from campus. Each day you’ll participate in a different activities, sometimes led by upper class Odyssey leaders and sometimes taught by the expeditionary studies faculty.
Or, you may be living in the backcountry for the week, hiking or paddling with a small group. You’ll bring what skills and experiences you have and gain some more from trained leaders, most likely from the very department you’ll be joining. You may be hiking “The Great Traverse” or be paddling in the St. Regis Wilderness Canoe Area.
Either way, you’ll be meeting other new EXP students and creating the start of your expeditionary studies adventures. And who knows, after your Odyssey experience, you may want to become an Odyssey leader yourself, a great opportunity and resume builder that just happens to be a perfect fit with your major.
We expect all incoming expeditionary studies students to participate in Odyssey because we’ve seen the benefits. Your Odyssey experience will be a jump-start to your years at Plattsburgh but also will be your introduction to the expeditionary studies faculty or upper level students.
We invite you to learn more about Expeditionary Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh. Please feel free to contact the chair.
