Placement

The English Bridge Program (E.B.P.) is offered to international students who are admitted through International Student Services or to resident non-native speakers of English who are admitted through Admissions. Students with TOEFL scores of 490 to 539 are place for the most part in advanced-level English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) courses, while students with scores of 450 to 489 are placed for the most part in at intermediate-level courses. A student's placement in individual E.S.L. courses is determined by the TOEFL sectional scores for listening, structure/writing, and reading.

In order to satisfy E.B.P. requirements, all students must earn a "C" grade in each E.B.P. course and general education/major courses (if enrolled in any), or obtain a 540 (207 computer-based) on the TOEFL.

Advanced Level Placement

Students placed at the advanced level normally complete the E.B.P. in one semester. These students are allowed to enroll in one or more academic general education/major classes along with their E.S.L. classes. In addition, these students may earn up to 9 academic credits for advances-level E.S.L. courses. These academic credits count toward the total number of credits required for graduation. Thus, typically advanced-level students will earn 12 to 16 credits in the E.B.P., in their first semester at the university.

Intermediate Level Placement

Students placed at the intermediate level normally complete the E.B.P. in two semesters. These students may be able to enroll in one or more advanced-level E.S.L. courses depending on TOEFL sectional scores. In their second semester, intermediate-level students normally move on to the advanced level. Thus, in the second semester, these students may register for one or more academic general education/major courses and may also earn up to 9 academic credits for E.S.L. course work.
