Awards and Prizes

Every spring the English program awards the following prizes. For information on how to apply for a particular prize, please contact Dr. Anna Battigelli in the English Department.

Herman Doh Sonnet Competition

Submissions to this contest are due in March. Please see the English department secretary for further details, or keep your eye out for flyers around Champlain Valley Hall.

Robert Frost Memorial Poetry Prize

The winner of this prize is chosen from among submissions to Z-Platt Almanac, Plattsburgh State's literary magazine.

English Department Fiction Prize

The winner of this prize is chosen from among submissions to Z-Platt Almanac, Plattsburgh State's literary magazine.

Award for Excellence in the Literary Essay

Eligible papers are those written for any English literature course between April of the previous year and March of this year.

Award for Excellence in Composition

Eligible papers are those written for an English Composition course (ENG101) or English Writing Skills course (ENG100) during the spring or fall of the previous year.

Tricia Voigt Memorial Prize

Eligible papers touch on some aspect of nature and must be written for an English course between April of the previous year and March of this year.

Earl Harlan Award in English

Nominated by English department faculty, the winner of this award must be an English major demonstrating financial need.

Engelhart Prize for Arts and Letters

Nominated by English department faculty, the winner of this award must be an English or English Adolescent Education major who has "demonstrated outstanding achievement in the study of literature and/or in expository, creative, or journalistic writing."

Hassler Endowment Award in English

Nominated by English department faculty, the winner of this award must be an English major with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 who has "demonstrated outstanding effort and achievement" and "unusual perserverance in pursuit of a degree in English."
