Master's Degree in Childhood Education
Our Childhood Education Master's Degree Allows You To:
- prepare to teach in an elementary school classroom grades 1-6;
- meet degree requirements to obtain initial teacher certification in childhood education (grades 1-6) granted through the New York State Education Department;
- benefit from personal advisement with a graduate advisor; and,
- compete courses in the evening.
Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.) in Childhood Education (45 graduate credits)
SUNY Plattsburgh offers a Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.) leading to initial New York State certification for grades 1-6. An applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a subject matter/major that coincides with a concentration area in SUNY Plattsburgh's undergraduate childhood education program (Any deficiencies in a concentration as listed in the current undergraduate catalog must be made up prior to admission). Concentration areas include: art, biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, mathematics, music, social studies, or Spanish.

Program Admission Requirements:
- a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a liberal arts major that coincides with a concentration area in SUNY Plattsburgh's undergraduate childhood education program. Transcripts will be reviewed to evaluate undergraduate coursework;
- a minimum undergraduate G.P.A. of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale;
- completion of 6 credits or equivalent in English, math, social studies, and science (7 credits-one laboratory class) with no grade lower than a B;
- a personal health course that fulfills the New York State Health Education requirement; and,
- two semesters or equivalent of a college-level foreign language (e.g., Spanish I and Spanish II). (Sign Language I and II permitted)

Application Deadlines and Additional Admission Requirements
The application deadline for fall matriculation is February 15th and for spring admission, October 15th. Admission to Plattsburgh State University of New York is granted without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or handicap.
- A letter of intent.
- Three (3) letters of reference indicating the applicant's ability to pursue graduate study. At least 2 letters must be from college faculty.
- Availability of program openings.
Required Prior to Student Teaching
- Completion of a minimum of 30 graduate hours with a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0.
- A grade of B or higher in all courses in the MST program.
- Meet all conditions of acceptance into the MST program.
Capstone Evaluation
Graduate students must complete a portfolio project. The project requires demonstrated knowledge major theories, research, and best teaching practices in the elementary school classroom.
