SUNY Plattsburgh offers Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.), leading to initial New York State certification for grades 7-12 in the following areas:

Admission Requirements
The application deadline for fall matriculation is February 15th and for spring admission, October 15th. Admission to SUNY Plattsburgh is granted without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or handicap.
Admission requirements include:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a liberal arts major aligned with subject areas in New York State Standards for Learning. Applicants for the M.S.T. Adolescence programs must have a major in the area for which they are seeking certification.
- Transcripts will be reviewed by faculty to evaluate undergraduate coursework. Arts and Sciences faculty will be responsible for assessing the appropriateness of the courses completed in the subject matter area and may require the candidate to take additional coursework prior to matriculation.
- Demonstration of literacy skills Applicants will be reviewed for the quality of their letter of intent.
- An undergraduate cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 is mandatory.
- Three (3) letters of reference indicating the applicant's ability to pursue graduate study. At least 2 of the letters should be from college faculty.
- Completed MST preparatory worksheet.
- Availability of program openings.
Required Prior to Student Teaching
- Completion of NYS Health Education mandates;
- Two sequential semesters (or equivalent) of a college level Foreign Language, or one semester intermediate (Sign Language I and II acceptable);
- Completion of all graduate coursework with a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0; and
- Completion of all required graduate professional education courses through the semester preceding the student teaching experience with no grade below a B.
Capstone Evaluation
Candidates must pass a comprehensive examination and complete a portfolio. The examination requires that the candidate demonstrate an under-standing of major theories, research, issues, and implications for practice related to secondary school teaching.
