Computer Science Journals
The College holds an institutional membership in the Association for Computing Machinery (A.C.M.). As a result, both the Feinberg Library and the Department receive subscriptions to all of the A.C.M. journals. In addition, the Department receives a complete set of publications from the Special Interest Groups (S.I.G.'s) of the A.C.M. The Library also receives subscriptions to a variety of the publications of the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (C.S.-I.E.E.E.). Some of the publications that are of particular interest to students are described briefly below:
- A.C.M. Computing Surveys - each article gives a broad review of a particular topic in computer science. Further details on the subject can be found through the large number of references included. It is written at a level that can be understood by most juniors and seniors
- Communicati ons of the A.C.M. - contains general information of a professional nature and technical articles on a broad spectrum of topics in Computing, written at a professional level.
- A.C.M. S.I.G. Bulletins - the thirty or so different bulletins of the A.C.M. Special Interest Groups contains professional information and technical information related to their specialties, e.g., graphics, programming languages, data base, simulation, etc.
- Compu ter - (published by the C.S.-I.E.E.E.) contains general information of a professional nature and technical articles on a broad spectrum of topics in Computing, written at a professional level.
- Datamation - contains the broadest collection of computer-related product advertisements, also general information and technical articles written at a non-professional level.
- BYTE - the journal for microcomputing.
You will find that the Library, and various individual members of the Department, receive a wide variety of other related professional and trade publications. In addition to the foregoing, there are numerous trade journals about I.B.M. and Apple Macintosh microcomputers, and related topics. These are too numerous to list. The advertisements in many of these journals give a good flavor of the commercial software market and available hardware for microcomputers. You are invited to peruse the various available collections.
Purchasing Your Own Computer
While the College provides computers for student use, we also encourage students to acquire their own computers. Students with their own computers can use them at time most convenient for them, can connect to various network resources on campus, and will learn not only how to use use the computer but also how to administer it.
If you are looking to buy a computer at this time, we encourage you to consider a laptop type. These are more expensive than desktops but they are light, easy to carry, and take up little room on your desk. laptops can connect to the wireless network available in many (but not all) places on campus.
With these factors in mind, the College Store has arranged purchase discount plans in the CAP Advantage Program. Also, special loans may be available to students for computer purchase. For further information about individual purchases, contact Larry at (518) 564-2082 in the College Store in Saranac Hall.
