M.A.L.S. in Computer Science Course Curriculum
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.A.L.S.), Computer Science Concentration
Admission Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in any area and completion of courses comparable to CSC 223 Data Structures and Algorithms, CSC 318 Discrete Mathematics with Computer Science Applications II, and CSC 333 Computer Organization.
Program Requirements
Major concentration in Computer Science
Choose 12-18 credits from the following courses:
- CSC 522 Theory of Computation, 3 credits, offered every fall.
- CSC 533 Operating Systems, 3 credits, offered every spring.
- CSC 541 Database Management Systems, 3 credits, offered every fall.
- CSC 545 Knowledge Representation and Inference, 3 credits, offered every spring.
- CSC 585 Seminar in Computer Science, 3 credits.
- CSC 599 Independent Study, 3-6 credits, offered every semester.
Two Minor Concentrations
- 6-9 credits each
Final Exercise
Choose one of the following:
- CSC 595 Master's Thesis or Research Project (3-6 cr.)
- Computer Science Comprehensive Exam (0 cr.)
Other graduation requirements
- Grade of B or higher in every computer science course above,
- Total of 30 credits.
- The span of studies cannot exceed 10 years.
- Other general requirements of the MALS Program, if any.
Notes:
- Some graduate courses have prerequisites beyond the admission requirements. These courses may be taken at Plattsburgh after admission.
- Graduate courses are open only to graduate students or undergraduates who are within 15 credits of graduation.
- Students can receive credit for a graduate computer science course only if they have not received credit for its undergraduate counterpart.
- Plattsburgh State undergraduate Computer Science students who plan to enroll in this program are advised to take CSC 533 when they are within 15 credits of graduation and apply for permission to substitute another upper division course for CSC 433.
A minor concentration (6-9 credits) in Computer Science is also available for use with one of the other major concentrations of the M.A. Liberal Studies Program.
