HELP DESK TECHNICIAN

Citizen Advocates, Inc has an opening for a Help Desk Technician.  Applicant should possess skills installing, supporting and maintaining Microsoft OS and Office software packages, troubleshooting hardware issues, knowledge of network environments and problem solving skills.  Strong training and documentation skills, people-skills including questioning and listening are required.  The candidate will ensure proper computer operation so users can accomplish their business tasks efficiently.  Applicant must be willing to travel to sites located in Malone and Saranac Lake.  35 hour week.  Benefits included.  5 years experience or Bachelors preferred.

PHP PROGRAMMER

Union Street Media, a leading Vermont web design and development company, is seeking to add a new PHP Programmer to our team.  Since 1999, we have developed database-driven web sites focusing on visual appeal, usability, and search engine prominence.  The company serves over 300 clients in three primary business areas: real estate, e-commerce, and content-driven sites.  Union Street Media is a young, aggressive company requiring its employees to wear many hats. 

The PHP Programmer will be responsible for the maintenance and development of our content management system which includes real estate tools and e-commerce. Experience developing and supporting PHP/MySQL content management systems is key. The work will entail building new features and improving existing ones, fixing bugs, and some project management. Sysadmin skills and/or experience with real estate web site development are pluses. The role requires timeliness in project delivery, attention to detail, and a high degree of professionalism.  We’re looking for a hard working team player who enjoys working on the web. MANAGER OF ECOMMERCE

As a growing ecommerce wholesaler located in Champlain, NY, the ideal candidate would continue to develop ecommerce solutions that will allow the company to provide more and better service to its many customers across the country. This person will also guide the development of the company's basic IT network in-house.

Experience in ecommerce systems development and with a range of tools and programming languages necessary for ecommerce system development and support is a must.  The company uses Visual Studio VB6.0, ASP, ASPX.NET, VB.NET, and C#.NET. My Internship Opened Doors to Professional Software Development

During my final semester at Plattsburgh State, I worked as an Intern at Nexnevo Consulting, Inc. At Nexnevo, I helped develop ASP.NET Web Applications and enterprise XML Web Services. This afforded me the opportunity to apply much of the knowledge I had gained at Plattsburgh State and also opened a door to professional software development with modern technology. Needless to say, working at Nexnevo was a very fulfilling experience

Chris Arena

Chris Arena recently set up a Book Exchange website for our Student Association so that students could buy and sell their used textbooks directly to one another. This involved building a content-driven website (like Amazon.com).

Robert LaVoie and Chowdhury Barua

Two other interns, Robert LaVoie and Chowdhury Barua worked together to interface the output from a light-measuring device at the Biology department to the input port of a PC. The measurements are converted into a form that can be displayed and analyzed in an Excel spreadsheet.

Internship, Co-Op, Service Learning, and Volunteer Requirements

The Career Development Center, located on the second floor of the Kehoe Administration Building, in cooperation with our Department, administers programs that give students the opportunity to gain professional career-related experiences. These opportunities include:

Co-Ops and internships provide valuable work experience prior to graduation, enhance responsibility, maturity and self-confidence, and allow students to establish future employment contacts. Interested students should consult the newsletter published by Career Development Center that lists available jobs and application deadlines.

Whatever the student level, it is essential to plan and prepare early in your college career for the kind of hands on experience you desire. Therefore, new students are encourage to contact the Career Development Center as soon as possible. Students are encourage to work with their advisors as soon as they have determined that they would like to include a hands-on experience as a part of their college work.

Internships

Internships are limited to students at the junior and senior level, and provide academic credit. Students involved in internships must be registered in CSC 498 before entering upon the internship. The number of credits to be awarded in an internship is determined by the Computer Science Department, based upon the experiences to be included, at the time of registration, with a grade (usually Pass or Fail) awarded upon submission of satisfactory documentation by the student and evaluation by the internship employer at the conclusion of the experience.

Cooperative Education (Co-Ops)

Co-Ops may be credit or non-credit paid work experiences. It is noted that the Department frowns upon the award of academic credit for paid experiences, unless there are extenuating circumstances. When credit is to be awarded, the procedures are the same as for an internship. Although Co-Ops are usually limited to students at the upper levels, some Co-Ops are suitable for freshman and sophomore level students.

Service Learning and Volunteering

Service Learning or Volunteer experiences are non-credit, non-paid placements open to all students. Volunteer experiences are ideal for students who are unsure of career choices since they provide an avenue for testing and evaluating various career options.
