Computer Science Programs at SUNY Plattsburgh

Prepare for a Career In Computer Science

Our Computer Science program blends theory and practice and is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as computer science professionals. Many of our graduates begin in industry as programmer analysts with a strong background in software engineering. A few go directly to graduate school.

You can choose from several study options in Computer Science. The Bachelor of Science program covers the core topics of the computer science discipline (10 courses) plus an additional five courses in advanced topics chosen to meet a student's interests from computing, mathematics, and physics. Our Bachelor of Arts program covers the same core topics of computer science and is augmented with in-depth studies in other academic departments and is appropriate as a second major. Our minor allows you to enhance your major with a foundation in computer science. You can also earn a graduate degree in Computer Science through our Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in Computer Science.

Learn to Design High Quality Software in a Supportive Environment

You will see a variety of programming languages in our curriculum beginning with Java and including C, Lisp and Prolog. A unifying theme in our courses is how to design correct, reliable, reusable, and maintainable software. You will find that many of our courses include programming projects where students work in groups; this reflects both the importance we attach to developing the skill of contributing to a team effort and our view that the best way to learn about computer science is to write programs that transform theoretical ideas into real, functioning systems.

Enhance Your Future with a Solid Background in the Liberal Arts

Finally, you should understand that Plattsburgh is a liberal arts college, not a technical training school. Each of the faculty members in Computer Science takes the mission of a liberal arts education very seriously. We believe that a college graduate should know about the history of our world, including accomplishments in the arts, sciences and humanities, and that your college education should help you live a full life and become a well-rounded professional.
