Job Prospects and Information

The Communication Disorders and Sciences program at SUNY Plattsburgh provides an academic and clinical professional education for students whose primary goal is to serve children and adults who have impairments of communication. The program has a proud history of preparing qualified speech-language pathologists and audiologists in the field of Communication Disorders and Sciences.

If you have an undergraduate degree in a field other than Speech Language Pathology, we offer a one-year preparatory program that will allow you to apply to the graduate school of your choice.

Speech-Language Pathologists:

What are the entry requirements for a career in the communication sciences?

A sincere interest helping people; personal integrity, self-confidence, dependability and a history of academic success; good oral and written communication skills; and good listening skills. Also, a strong liberal arts focus is recommended at the undergraduate level--typically, students obtain a degree in communication disorders and sciences. Graduate work is necessary for ASHA certification and is the entry degree in most work settings.

Where can I work?

What is a typical salary?

Will jobs continue to be available?

Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that much faster than average overall growth is expected for speech-language pathologists and audiologists because of a growing and aging population. Our students never had any difficulty starting a career and the future is still promising!
