Chemistry Faculty - Dr. Fotis Nifiatis
Assistant Professor
Organic Chemistry, Introductory Chemistry I
Fotis Nifiatis obtained a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Ioannina, Greece, a M.S. degree in organic chemistry from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (GC-CUNY), USA, and a Ph.D. degree in physical organic chemistry from the GC-CUNY. He worked for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) at Dayton, Ohio as a visiting scientist before joining the chemistry department of the SUNY Plattsburgh in 2003.
During his graduate work at the CUNY, and under the supervision of Prof. C.M. Drain, he worked towards the formation of supramolecular devices via self-assembly of porphyrins, mediated by metal ion coordination, hydrogen-bond molecular recognition and electrostatic interactions. At WPAFB he studied the detailed mechanism of two-photon initiated processes and their application in photo-initiated polymerization, microfabrication and low energy photocuring.
Among his honors as a scientist is the award of the distinguish graduate student by the Foresight Institute of Nanotechnology, at 1998, for his contributions to nanotechnology during his graduate work.
Current research interests lie in the field of coordination chemistry and photochemistry aiming to develop newer and more efficient molecular devices. He particularly enjoys conducting research with undergraduate students.
His teaching interests lie predominately in general, organic, green, bio-organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. He is recently developing a laboratory manual in organic and biological chemistry.
