How to Begin the Internship Process
Taming the Internship Process
The process of finding and securing an internship can be challenging. The Office of Career Opportunities and Internships (O.C.O.I.) can make your life easier. We will help you find internships that suit your career interests and that will enhance your resume. Make an appointment to come in. Here are some tips to get you started.
How do I find internship opportunities?
- Check out the School of Business and Economics (S.B.E.) Career Information Center Board located in Redcay Hall. Here you'll also find hot jobs, career news, and graduate school information, as well as valuable information specific to internships in every business area.
Also check Banner Web for a list of internship opportunities categorized by your specific major. After loggin in to Banner Web, select the Employment Opportunities Menu from the main menu, then select Internship-Students to view the list. Note: you will need a valid Plattsburgh State User I.D. and PIN to access Banner Web. - Start early. Many agencies have early deadlines; some up to six months before the placement term.
- Arrange a meeting with the director of the O.C.O.I. to discuss eligibility, interests, and requirements.
Internship Success Tips
- Dress for success. Conduct yourself professionally, paying careful attention to your dress and demeanor.
- Be there on time. Tardiness is a sign of disregard.
- Maintain contact with your faculty sponsor and the O.C.O.I. director during your internship. Your S.B.E. representatives may conduct site visits and contact you about questions, concerns, and feedback you or your internship sponsor may have. We encourage you to contact your S.B.E. representatives as well. Let us know how you're doing!
- Talk to your fellow students. Tell them about your positive experience and encourage them to do an internship as well.
