Anthropology Facutly - Dr. Deborah Altamirano

Associate Professor of Anthropology

Deborah R. Altamirano is an associate professor of anthropology. She also participates in the Latin American Studies Program and currently serves as the Director of the Women's Studies Program. Her areas of teaching and research interest include political and social movements, gender, transnationalism, democratic transitions, and immigrant, refugee, and exile communities in the Americas and the circum-Mediterranean. She has done extensive research in Greece with political activists and with former political exiles and refugee populations. She is currently focusing on comparative research in Latin America. Dr. Altamirano spent 2001-2003 as a visiting research scholar with the Bain Research Group on Gender at U.C. Berkeley, she has been a fellow at the Institute for Ethics in Public Life on the Plattsburgh campus, and has been very active in developing and teaching in the freshman learning communities.
