Clintonville Forge Project Virtual Tour - Stone Archway

Excavating a Stone Archway

Danielle takes a break on top of a stone archway that ran through the south wall of the west bellows house, while Kristina continues excavating below the arch. A waterwheel in this structure drove bellows that provided the air blast to bloomery forges along the long, front wall of the main building. An exit raceway ran under the arch, carrying water back to the river. A jumble of timbers, fallen wall stones, and ground water seepage made this a particularly challenging excavation.
