Clintonville Forge Project Virtual Tour - Bloomery Forge

Excavating Bloomery Forge

The students looking at the forge they have uncovered This excavation by Michael, Lily, Haagen and Mark revealed the lower portion of one of the bloomery forges in which finely crushed iron ore was smelted. The firebox of the forge consisted of heavy cast iron plates, surrounded by brickwork that originally extended upward about 25 feet through the roof of the building. This amazing discovery included three of the firebox plates still in place, along with plates from another forge that had been discarded on this one when the works were abandoned and dismantled over 100 years ago.
