The Adirondack Experience and Expeditionary Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh

Adventure Education and More

Photo of Casey Henley, ADX Head Climbing and Skiing Instructor, on the summit of Mount Vinson, Antartica The Adirondack Experience (ADX) coordinates all of Plattsburgh State's outdoor programs. This includes the major and minor in Expeditionary Studies (EXP). Our programs offer academic and recreational opportunities, training, and education for all students.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor programs at colleges have a variety of names and take many different forms. You'll need to look closely to find the one you want. ADX includes more than you can imagine. We offer a full curriculum of academic courses in rock climbing, ice climbing, sea kayaking, and backcountry skiing. For starters, these courses take you to the mountain, lake, and river landscapes which surround our campus.

Recreation

All our programs are about creating new experiences, for your physical self and your mental self. You can earn academic credits in Expeditionary Studies courses as electives, as part of general education, as a part of your own academic program, or by enrolling in the major or minor programs. And you can do this with small classes offered by a faculty with world-wide experience.

Experiential Education

Taking a class on Lake Champlain or renting snowshoes or attending a talk by a renown adventurer - they're all experiential. Plattsburgh State's campus location offers access to the many trails, routes, and waterways of the Adirondack Park, Lake Champlain and beyond. Local settings are our classrooms, introducing you to the potentials for adventures in our backyard and preparing you for adventures beyond.

ADX prepares you-future outdoor leaders and adventurers-to reach places you've only dreamed of!
